HELP FOR ACEH

  

In the face of the worst natural disaster in modern times with hardship that befell, there are hopes to survive which can be accomplished, among others through rehabilitation efforts in the area of health, education, and livelihood. Those three areas are considered the areas of basic needs of human being, which development go beyond the rescue and relief stage, but more on longer term rehabilitation efforts.

Responding to emergency and crisis situation, i.e., in Aceh and North Sumatra’s education post Tsunami, SEAMEO offers to provide prompt and relevance assistance based on its strength and expertise. Particularly, SEAMEO expect to be able to respond and contribute to the coverage of the GOI rehabilitation plan in Aceh and North Sumatra.

It is very apparent that well trained teachers are the very heart of every education endeavor. Furthermore, a quality educational program is demonstrated among other by the quality of curriculum which is developed based on the consideration of expected educational competences and outcomes, local wisdom, global communication skills, and pluralism, involving educational practitioners in the field as well as instructional and curriculum developers. Specifically, for this project SEAMEO SEAMOLEC in Indonesia proposes to work with local teachers, lecturers, and education officers in Aceh to develop and promote alternative school curriculum, which accommodates the issue of local wisdom, including pluralism, and multiculturalism; and water sanitation.

The two issues of Alternative Curriculum are very crucial because they are very relevant in overcoming the aftermath of the tsunami. Issues on water conservation need to be addressed since healthy water is vital to the survival of the community, while after the tsunami healthy water becomes very expensive commodity. Therefore people of Aceh should be prepared to conserve the water. To achieve this objective the first step is to educate the schoolchildren about the importance and conservation of water.

Since Indonesia is a multicultural country and also open to multicultural exposures in the era of globalization, this moment is a very strategic time to introduce the perspectives on global issues, and to strengthen the sense of nationality while still preserving the local culture. Supposedly, that every body will have awareness and appreciation toward local wisdom as well as national identity, so that they can live in harmony in multicultural condition. In order to achieve this objective, the local wisdom and multicultural education should be given emphasis in school curriculum.

The focus of this program is the development and implementation of alternative curriculum for elementary, junior and senior high school as well as for teacher training institutions in Aceh.
